New Thushaya Sinhalasrilanka Film by Sahan Wijesinghe at Sandeshaya Sri Lanka

Story:

History is on its way to repeat itself. The dazzling spectacle of yesteryear star Vijaya Kumaratunga romancing Malani Fonseka will be recreated with a new stance when young actors Saliya Sathyajith and Shalika Edirisinghe takes to the screen and dances to the evergreen tunes sung by H.R. Jothipala.

Yasapalitha Nanayakkara’s hit film ‘Thushara’ remoulded by actor and producer turned director Sahan Wijesinghe boasts of the glamour of the past and more. The remake of the 1973 hit will begin screening at the LFD, MPI and NFC’s Rithma circuit cinemas islandwide from October 9. Significantly the day also marks the 64th birth anniversary of Vijaya Kumaratunga.

“Though we are advanced in technology I have always felt that the present movies lack the beauty of past hits. Movies made in the 1960s and 70s made use of the cream of the industry, from the stars in the lead roles to the music and plot. I have watched Nanayakkara’s ‘Thushara’ 26 times and I had the hope of doing a remake. There is a global interest towards making remakes. Some of our own movies like ‘Kadavunu Poronduwa’, ‘Sujatha’ and ‘Hathara Dennama Soorayo’ had also been revived with new faces and some of them have proven to be a success,” Wijesinghe noted the reasons for remaking the movie. He also said that movie-making is an extremely risky task today.

“There is lack of resources like good script writers, lyricis! ts and vocalists. These three ingredients play key roles in a ! movie’ s success. I had a choice between making an entirely new production and a remake. As the latter is less tricky, I chose to take it up,” he added.

Besides producing and directing the remake he had also taken up the role of the villain, originally acted by Baptist Fernando. He said that if the remake had been done 10 or 15 years ago he would have taken on the role of the hero.He noted, “I searched for actors to suit the characters for over a year and finally came upon Saliya. He possessed the charisma I was searching for and I believe Shalika is quite suited to the role.

Countries like India have a separate set of artistes for the mini screen ! and an entirely different cast for movies. I chose faces which do not appear often on television and during that stage. Saliya had only acted in one teledrama and Shalika, Pumi Purashinghe and Buddhika Rambukwella too were literally new faces to the audience. Now most of these artistes have joined teledramas. That is a drawback for my movie. They are professional actors and it is hard for them to survive entirely on films.”

The remake will retain the film’s eight original hit numbers ‘Jeewanaye Meewanaye’, ‘Meedum Gala Kande’, ‘Kalak Thisse’, ‘Epa Wunoth Heta One Wei, Rantharu Se (Hoi Hoi), Kavdo Ave, Mahada Obe Dayavi’, ‘Ho Ho Thushara’ and ‘Kalak Thisse’(duet) by H.R. Jothipala and Angeline Gunathilaka.

Robin Fernando, Rex Koddipilli, Chathura Perera, Chitra Wakishta, Anju Bandara, Lasantha de Alwis, Sonia Disa, Remenzi Fernando, Sarath de Silva, Rizwan Fa and others too play significant roles in the story.

Sarath de Alwis is the music director while K. D. Dayananda is the cameraman. “I had problems finding the money but NFC chairman Jayantha Dharmadasa and Sunil T. Fernando helped me out in a lot of matters. I have several movies in mind to remake before engaging on a production of my own but it all depends on how well ‘Thushara’ rolls. If I get back the sum I spent on the movie I would certainly focus on another one,” he admitted with a smile.

When Kareena Came On Stage...

It was Kareena's first visit to Ahmemadad. But one that she’s unlikely to forget for the rest of her life.

Thousands of star-struck Gujarati fans swarmed the Kanavati Club when when they got to know the event organized by Vashu Bhagnani for his son Jackky’s debut will feature Kareena Kapoor.

The fans were excitable enough when Sophie Chowdhary danced with Jackky Bhagnani.

But all hell and yell broke loose when Kareena came on stage for a medley of her hit songs.

To say pandemonium prevailed woul! d be an understatement. As hundreds of Kareena’s fan ran towards her on stage the security bandobast went almost bust.

Anything could have happened to the panic-stricken actress.

Groggy and shaken Vashu Bhagnani said, “It’s true. Ahmedabad went crazy for Kareena. We expected a huge turn-out at the Karnavati Club. But not this much. 30, 000 people showed up. And when Kareena came on stage they lost control. About 400 people rushed to the stage. Fortunately we whisked her out from the back entrance. So nothing untoward happened.”

Vashu is eternally indebted to Kareena. “She took on these frenzied fans for my son’s sake. Who says this film industry is heartless? Kareena is all heart.”

In fact after the Ahmedabad incident Vashu had reservations about asking Kareena to be part of the next Vashu-Jackky show in Delhi on 27 May. But Kareena is adamant.

Says Kareena, “Yeah it did get pretty tricky at a point. Y! eh sab hota hai. It was my first visit to Ahemedabad. I perfor! med a me dley of my best songs choreographed by Remo. It was for Vashuji’s son. How can I forget he gave me my first big hit Mujhe Kuch Kehna Hai? No when his son is entering films it’s my duty to support him.”

The unruly fans rattled her. But to her surprise hordes of her little girl -fans descended at the venue of the performance dressed as her character Geet in Jab We Met.

Laughs Kareena pleasurably, “It simply zapped me. I completely forgot the heat of Ahmedabad when I saw those girls. It will be a long time before I’m allowed to forget Geet in Jab We Met.”

Movie Review Of "Kites"

One of the most eagerly awaited films of the year is the Hrithik Roshan- Kangna Ranaut- Barbara Mori starrer Kites.

While the film is likely to hit theatres only in the latter half of the year, it has already generated tremendous buzz among the trade circles.

Everything right from Hrithik's sizzling hot chemistry with Barbara Mori to his super cool dance moves is being spoken about. However, not much is known about the film except for the fact that Hrithik plays a salsa dance instructor.

Big Pictures are in fact all keen to market Kites to i! nternational buyers, distributors and media during the upcoming Cannes Film Festival. In fact, a brief description of the film's premise is also mentioned in some websites which provide information about this year's Cannes International Film Festival.

The premise of the film goes like this:-

In the harsh terrain of the Mexican desert, a mortally wounded man is left for dead in the heat of the desert sun.

This is J (Hrithik Roshan) - once a street smart, carefree young guy and now a wanted man. As death looms, the only thing that keeps him alive is the quest to find the love of his life, Natasha (Barbara Mori).

A woman, betrothed to another man, surely destined for J. A woman, who comes into his life like a bolt of lightning, and changes his life forever.

Love is a moment. The moment J and Natasha saw each other, words were not necessary. In that moment, they knew instantly that they belonged together.

But, something went wrong. The ensuing fight of the two lovers results in a deadly chase. J battles death but nothing can prepare him for what he is about to discover.

Kites is a story of love that goes beyond barriers, boundaries and cultures. It is a story of passion that defies every rule, of a relationship which takes two lovers on a journey that is filled with violence and death, of precious moments that are unforgettable. Finally it is a story of betrayal that is beyond comprehension.

While one will have to wait and watch if this is indeed the film's plot, on first reading it does seem very exciting and intriguing.

Priyanka Chopra Turned 27 Without A Party

Priyanka Chopra Birthday
She is one of Bollywood's leading actresses and turns 27 Saturday. But Priyanka Choprasays she is not a party animal and would like to just have a quiet birthday with her near and dear ones.

"I'm not a big party person and I don't like throwing parties at all. So this time a lot of my family members have decided to fly down to be with me, " Priyanka told over e-mail from Mumbai.

"It's likely to be a day spent doing nothing in particular - just hanging out with the people who love me and want to be around me to make my day special. That's all, " she added.

Priyanka has had a fulfilling year with two hits "Fashion" and "Dostana", which fetched her lots of awards.

She is entering a new year in her life, but hasn't set any goals for herself.

"I've never set any goals for myself. I've always been destiny's child and destiny has always looked after me. I think someone up there always manages my life and does what's best for me. So I just leave it up to Him. I just work hard at what he sends my way, " she said.

Currently, Priyanka is busy shooting for Yash Raj Films' "Pyaar Impossible" along with Uday Chopra and Dino Morea.

The actress is also looking forward to the release of Vishal Bharadwaj's "Kaminey" with Shahid Kapoor and Ashutosh Gowariker's "What's Your Rashee?" in which she plays 12 different roles.

Priyanka Chopra Birthday

Movie Review of "Kaminey"

Dhan Te Nan. Vishal Bhardwaj pays homage to cinema of yore and that's reason enough to go out and grab tickets for one of the most keenly anticipated films of our times.

A few monsoons ago, Farah Khan paid homage to the cinema of 1970s with OM SHANTI OM. Now Bhardwaj picks up characters that we have witnessed on the Hindi screen before, but executes it like Tarantino and Guy Ritchie do. He creates a film that's so different from movies we've witnessed thus far.

Let's say, Kaminey is bold, stark, funny and unpredictable and that's what works in its favour. There're two more reasons: Shahid Kapoor and of course, 'Dhan Te Nan'. Okay, we've seen Shahid pit! ching in a sincere act in his earlier films, but Kaminey should catapult him to superstardom. His double role in Kaminey is exemplary.

There's another star in Kaminey and that's 'Dhan Te Nan'. Your heart starts beating faster every time you hear this in the background or also when Shahid breaks into the song. The track is as big a craze as 'Jumma Chumma' [HUM], 'Ek Do Teen' [TEZAAB] and 'Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai' [KHAL-NAYAK] and will contribute enormously in attracting viewers in hordes.

Having said that, I wish to add that Kaminey is not the usual masala film. Sure, it's a well-made film, but there's no spoon feeding here.

One has to be attentive, very attentive to grasp the goings-on and also the twists in the tale. It's not one of those lock-your-brains-at-home types, for sure. And that might not be too appealing a thought for those who swear by candyfloss or meaningless ha-ha-thons.

To cut it short, Kaminey is a film with an ! attitude. Like it or leave it, but you'd never be able to igno! re it. W ord from the wise: Go for this hatke experience!

Kaminey is about a pair of twin brothers, Charlie and Guddu [Shahid Kapoor]. Charlie lisps, while Guddu stammers. They are as different as chalk and cheese. And they can't stand the sight of each other. Till one fateful rainy night, their lives cross.

Charlie gets mixed up in a deathly get-rich-quick scheme, while Guddu realizes that the love of his life, Sweety [Priyanka Chopra], has unwittingly put a price on his head. The brothers are sucked into a world of drugs, guns and money. Their lives collide head on with the lives of gangsters, rebel soldiers, rogue politicians and crooked cops.

The brothers have to r! un to protect themselves, their dreams, their love. And most importantly, realize that all they have is each other.

It takes time to get used to the world Vishal Bhardwaj wants us to enter. The characters, the relationships, the lingo, the tone and the setting… frankly, you don't take to Kaminey instantly. But twenty minutes into the film and things start falling in place. From thereon, you're drawn into a different world completely.

The interval point raises the bar and also the expectations. The story takes a dramatic turn at this juncture, but minutes before that, 'Dhan Te Nan' makes the proceedings exhilarating and stimulating.

Right from the sequence after the interval to the finale, Vishal Bhardwaj peels off layer after layer, which erupts like a volcano towards the end. The end is long drawn and with so many characters in the film, it only takes time to give a culmination to each of those characters. And that gets tedious.
The violent end might not find universal acceptance. Vishal! Bhardwa j proves that he's a master storyteller. Kaminey is a damn difficult film to conceptualize and execute and Vishal does it with gusto.

Besides the soundtrack ['Dhan Te Nan'], the effectual background score only enhances the impact. The dialogues, also penned by Vishal, are super. At places, clapworthy. Tassaduq Hussain's cinematography is top notch.

Shahid takes a really big leap with Kaminey. Note how he handles the two characters, Guddu and Charlie, brilliantly.

This film is a step to superstardom and also which will open new doors and vistas for him as an actor. Priyanka is first-rate. She's so much in sync with her character. Also, she gets the Maharashtr! ian accent perfect.

Amole Gupte is outstanding. An incredible actor! Tenzing Nima and Chandan Roy Sanyal leave a solid impression. Shiv Subrahmanyam and Hrishikesh Joshi are perfect.

On the whole, Kaminey lives up to the hype associated with it. The film has three stars -- Vishal Bhardwaj [a name that's immensely respected by moviegoers], Shahid Kapoor and 'Dhan Te Nan' -- and this combo as also the crooked characters and a genuinely hatke subject should guarantee ample footfalls in cineplexes even after its initial weekend.

The weekend business should be huge due to the holidays all through the weekend: Friday [Janmashtami], Saturday [Independence Day] and Sunday.

Of course, the business is bound to be affected in parts of Mumbai territory due to Swine Flu, but the film should take off in a big way when theatres re-open.

Salman Khan Will Gets His Friends Back

It's Salman Khan time in Bollywood. With his full-on actioner "Wanted" becoming a hit, the superstar has millions of rupees riding on his shoulders with three more big-budget films lined up. And all his friends in the industry - from David Dhawan to Vipul Shah - are rejoicing at the actor's success.

"Wanted" earned about Rs.38 crore (Rs.380 million) across the country in its first week and industry experts feel that the film's good business will help Salman's forthcoming releases - "Main aur Mrs. Khanna", "London Dreams" and "Veer".

"Salman always knew when and where to strike. He was always very confident about 'Wanted' and this is the reason why he went all out to prom! ote the film," Dhawan, who has worked with Salman in more than half a dozen films, told.

"Forget first weekend collections; it was sheer havoc when Eid festivities began. Audience response inside auditoriums was unprecedented," he added.

Directed by Prabhu Deva, "Wanted" was a raw action-drama comparable to Aamir Khan's "Ghajini".

"Salman may have done one or two bad films in recent times due to which it appeared to some that he was no more in the reckoning. They were mistaken though because he is beyond hits and flops," said Abbas Burmawalla of director duo Abbas-Mustan.

"His strong fan base could sense from a distance that 'Wanted' was a film to watch out for and turned it into such a huge success," he added.

Salman's "Yuvvraaj" and "God Tussi Great Ho" bombed at the box office and many believed he was down and out. But the industry doesn't quite believe so.

" 'Wanted' is Salman's one-man show. Yes, eve! ryone involved with the film has done a fabulous job, but it i! s Salman 's pull that got the audiences into theatres. Otherwise director Prabhu Deva was making his first Hindi film while Ayesha Takia isn't amongst the top three heroines that we have today," said Sanjay Kapoor, brother of Boney Kapoor who produced "Wanted".

"He gave 'Wanted' his full support and led the entire promotional campaign. He was supremely excited about the film and gave his heart, body, soul and time to its making followed by promotion," he added.

Vipul Shah, who has worked with Salman in the film "London Dreams" that releases Oct 30, is happy that Salman's three-film stint this year has got off to a good start with "Wanted".

"My promotion plan though is not as expensive as that of 'Wanted'.

We are going right ahead in creating awareness around 'London Dreams', but the spillover of 'Wanted' should also help our campaign. Since 'Wanted' is all over, I am sure the euphoria and Salman's presence amongst audiences will continue for many more weeks to come," said Shah.

Filmmaker Suneel Darshan, who has never worked with Salman, is a little guarded before declaring this as a golden run of the actor.

" 'Wanted' has done quite well in India but its fate in the overseas market has been contradictory. With crores of rupees riding on his shoulders in the current season on 'Veer', 'London Dreams' and 'Main aur Mrs. Khanna', all due to release shortly, god forbid if anything goes wrong, it will have severe repercussions on the industry's economy. This is just another interesting phase for Salman...," he said.

Himesh Reshammiya, with whom Salman has had a decade-long association, has a final wor! d though. "Salman was a superstar, is a superstar and will alw! ays rema in a superstar."

Soha Ali Khan & Sharmila Are Coming Together?

Veteran actress Sharmila Tagore has starred with her daughter Soha Ali Khan for the first time in "Life Goes On", a film on British Indians that was screened at the ongoing 11th Mumbai Film Festival.

"This is the first time Sharmila Tagore and Soha are sharing screen space. I have known Sharmila Tagore for a long time and from the very beginning I have imagined her in the character she is playing," said Sangeeta Datta, who has made her directorial debut with the film.

"I have worked with Soha while I was associate director in Rituparno Ghosh's 'Antar Mahal'," said London-based Datta.

The story of "Life Goes On" revolves around the cultural conflict betwee! n a father and his youngest daughter, with different sub-plots shown in flashback.

The story, script and screenplay are by Datta and detail the prejudices and Islam-phobia still deep-rooted among certain sections of immigrant Indians in London. It is a contemporary adaptation of Shakespeare's "King Lear" but it has a hopeful ending.

"The story is the contemporary adaptation of 'King Lear', though the ending is more hopeful. It shows that love can conquer," explained Datta.

Sharmila Tagore, Girish Karnad, Om Puri, Soha Ali Khan, Rez Kempton, Neerja Naik, Mukulika Banerjee, Christopher Hatherall, Stef Patten and Aria Gitanjali Banerjee Watts played the lead roles in the film.

Datta worked as an associate director in Rituparno Ghosh's films "Chokher Bali", "Raincoat" and "Antar Mahal".

When asked about their performance while sharing screen space, she said: "They were as good as expected. They gave an amazing performa! nce while shooting an extremely difficult scene."

! She said Sharmila is a perfectionist and even guides co-actors. "Sharmila wants the shots to be perfect. She helps her co-stars whenever required," said Datta.

The director wanted to cast veteran Bengali actor Saumitra Chatterjee, but he was not keeping well, so Girish Karnad was chosen instead.

"I was very keen to rope in Saumitra Chatterjee but he was not keeping well those days. Thankfully, Karnad agreed," said Datta.

Lyricist Javed Akhtar translated two Tagore songs into Urdu for the film. Datta says this is the first time any Rabindra Sangeet has been translated into Urdu.

"Rabindra Sangeet itself has been used in films plenty of times, but this is the first time the lyrics of such a song have been translated into Urdu with the same tune," said Datta.

She would prefer to call "Life Goes On" a British movie.

"I am a British Bengali but still hold an Indian passport. As the story is about immigrant Indians in Lond! on and has been shot with a British crew, probably it would be considered a British movie," guessed Datta.

The Mumbai film fest started Oct 29 and will conclude Nov 5. The film will also be screened at the Mahindra Indo-American Arts Council (MIAAC) Film Festival in New York this month.
